Dearest Chick, I again address this biography with two corrections:
Gina’s kids bear their father’s surname: Tony Joseph (after Daddy) Swisher, b. 1 Mar 83
Cassandra Danielle (Cassie) Swisher, b 10 May 85
Gina remarried and is now divorced from Mr Green.
Regarding Daddy’s early picture, now THAT”S my Daddy!
Thank you for your prompt corrections.
Con carino, tu prima,
Maria

This is amazing. My grandfather was Joseph A. Matacia born in Cincinati, Ohio. I would like to see where I fit in. My father is Richard B. Matacia born on Norfolk, VA.
Great Photos, I still remember playing in the Matacia fruit company. Older fellows there gave my father (Louis Jr.) a box of fruit. My mother (Frances Wilson) prepared it for my four sisters (Marlyn, Rebecca, Ginnette, and, Sara) and I to eat. C ville was a great place to visit some fine people. Now, I only fly my plane over and remember my younger days, like crying when grandfather(Louis Sr.) fell ill with cancer. To this day, do not understand why people smoke!

I am an old Guadalajara friend of Gilda Matacia. We met in 1961 in Guadalajara shortly after our families had moved there. We were very good friends all through the years until 1065 when I graduated from HS and moved to California. She was a very friendly, loving person liked by everyone. I am sad to read that she died at a very young age. I wonder if she ever shared her friendship with Damon Saxe? They were HS sweethearts. Damon died New Years, 1968 in Guadalajara.
Herb, probably you don’t remember me, my name is Carmen Flores Guasti, I have met you in Guadalajara, at Instituto Colon, you were one year ahead of me in HS, I am very sorry to know that Gilda Matacia, my very good and dear friend died in 1994. I lost track of her when she moved to the U.S. I knew her parents very well, they lived very near home, and Gilda and I had good times together. Her father taught me some Italian lessons. I remember she was happy all the time, and had real good times with her. I am stil very good friend of Mariza (Luis Carlos Arreola’s wife), who were sweethearts since HS at the Instituto Colon. I live in Monterrey, Mexico, married and have a son, 37 and a daughter 33. Two grandaughters and expecting the third, a boy. Hope you remember me. Best regards, Carmen.
I would love to hear from Maria. I believe we were roommates in Austin, TX. 1973-74.
Dearest Betty, Maria, Gina, Angela

My grandmother, Domenica (“Minnie”) Santostefano Visconti, and your grandmother, Gilda Santostefano Pologruto, were sisters. They came from Alvita in Campania, Italy.
As a child, I came to Charlottesville with my parents, Frank and Elena Visconti, to visit your family, as well as my aunt Marie Visconti O’Grince, who also lived in Charlottesville. I have very fond memories of holiday gatherings at your home, and even a sleepover with your sister Gilda in the big house on Jefferson. Everybody called me Rosie then. After you moved to Guadalajara, I corresponded with “little Gilda,” as my family called her.
In September, 1964, I accompanied my grandmother Minnie from NYC to Baltimore on a bus, where Aunt Marie & Uncle Sylvester O’Grince had moved. Uncle Syl then drove us to Charlottesville to visit Aunt Gilda in a nursing home.
Years later, my 2 daughters both fell in love with UVA and Charlottesville, and have graduated. Who knew what an impact those childhood family visits would have on my own children? They are the ones who asked me, “How did Aunt Marie end up in Charlottesville from NYC?” This led me back to the connection with your family. My cousin Richard DelFranco, the eldest of our generation, told me Aunt Marie met Uncle Syl, a student at UVA, while visiting her cousin Kathryn in Charlottesville.
I recently retired, and decided to search for Gilda, hoping to email greetings to her. I am so sorry to hear about her death.
Aunt Marie Visconti O’Grince passed away in 2005. She was 92, the last of her generation of Visconti. Uncle Syl lives in Ocean City, MD. My mother Elena Visconti is 89 & lives in Florida.
My best to you and your family.
Rosemarie
Wow enjoyed reading this blogpost. I submitted your rss to my blogreader!!

My great-grandfather, Edward A. Joachim, was the proprietor of the Model Steam Laundry. I would have loved to have known Ann!
Great site and stories!
Reencontrar a María.
Carmen

Found this history of the Matacia after reading Ernie’s obituary in the Charlottesville Va paper. Stephen, our sympathy to you and Theresa on the passing of Ernie. We remember him as a caring person, a great neighbor, devoted Father and Husband.
This Matacia history is amazing and I am sure that Stephen you are very proud.
Please let us know you are well. Thinking of you,
Bill and Judy Lynch
I knew Al “Sid” Matacia in the 50’s and would like to hear from him now and catch up. I did have the pleasure of meeting his parents on my visit to Charlottesville around 1957. They were wonderful people. I lived in Tampa Florida at that time but now live in Peoria Arizona.
Please pass this message on if you can.
Thanks,
Pat Wright York
This is Rosemarie Visconti Lewandowski again. I am in the process of putting together information on my family’s history and beginnings in the USA. I’m wondering if Uncle Laurence and Aunt Kathryn remember any information or stories about the Santostefano family. I believe my grandmother Domenica (“Minnie”) Santostefano Visconti travelled to America with her father Tommaso Santostefano, arriving here very young, 12 or 13 years old. Do you recall any information on Gilda Santostefano Pologruto’s arrival in America, or an address in Philadelphia from those years before her marriage? Was there any correspondence from family members in Alvito, Italy? Tommaso was married to Rosa D’Aquila, I have learned since my last correspondence with you. Can you forward this request to Uncle Laurence, via Jo-Jo?
Thanks, I am trying anything I can think of,
Rosemarie
My name is Kimberly Rutledge-Pologruto I am married to Brian Pologruto which would be Gilda Santostefano Pologruto’s Great Grandson. Frank Santostefano Pologruto is Brian’s Grandfather who still lives in Charlottesville. My husband and I have five children. I am trying to gather any Family History info for them and would greatly appreciate any info you could share my e-mail is kimrutledge08@comcast.net Thank You
Hi, love the site. I’m trying to gather some photo’s of the Matacia Family since I have a great deal of them. I am the great granddaughter of Louis Joseph Matacia, Sr and Anna Matacia in Charlottesville,VA. My father is Louis Joseph Matacia, Jr. and I have one son, Daniel Louis Cohen born April 8, 981. I was a former model, actress, photograper and published writer. I will send you some photo’s to add to this wonderful collection. My email is filmadvisor@hotmail.com.
I have been all over the world submitted material for the Cold Case Files, The Profiler (which is based on my twin sister Ginette Andrew Matacia), Sightings, Unsolved Mysteries and submitted material for every network. If you have time please contact me for the site and I would love to send some photo’s and up dates. Ginette and I were born in Charlottesville, VA in 1958. Changed my last name from Matacia to Alexander for the film industry in 1983. Most of the entertainment world could not pronounce my Italian name.
Was so happy to come across this! My grandmother was Agnes Antoon Abdella from Greenwood, MS. I am the daughter of Paul Albert Abdella. Loved hearing why our ancestors left Syria — never knew the answer to that question! My email is amy.abdella@gmail.com.
My Dearest Matacia Family, I just received your historical account; your last account I received was in 2009 and I responded with an email address which is no longer valid. Please drop a line with latest news; I do hope Betty is well?
